MEDIA RELEASE

The Hawaii County Police Department is reminding residents that only the South Hilo and Kona police districts answer telephone calls to the police station 24 hours a day.

Personnel in the rest of the districts — Puna, Ka’u, North Kohala, South Kohala, Hamakua and North Hilo — staff the police stations and answer calls from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

Residents should call the police non-emergency number, 935-3311, to request police service, a police spokesman said. The calls are answered by police dispatch personnel who will send the nearest available police officer to respond.

If there is an emergency, residents should call 911 for an immediate police response, the spokesman said.
