MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE 4

Big Island police have renewed a request for information in the shooting death of a 19-year-old youth in Pepeekeo, South Hilo, on January 31, 2001.

Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives said the victim, Kallen James Agliam, reportedly was to meet two persons, one in Pepeekeo and then the other in Hakalau, between 4 and 5 p.m. on the day he was slain.

Information from the public is frequently vital in solving crimes, said Lieutenant Derek Pacheco, head of the Hilo Criminal Investigation Section.

Pacheco noted that information supplied to the police led to the arrest of a murder suspect within 36 hours after the body of Tetsuya Takahashi, 20, of Fuchu City, Tokyo, Japan, was discovered. TakahashiÆs body was found on February 18, 2001, on the shoulder of the road near the Keaau Underpass in Puna.

In the Agliam case, police are asking anyone with information on the identity of either of the two individuals the victim was supposed to meet to call Detective Grace Castillo of the Hilo CIS at 961-2377 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. Crime Stoppers keeps the identity of callers strictly confidential.

A passerby called police on the evening of January 31, 2001, to report that the body of a man was lying on the shoulder of the roadway of the old Hilo Coast Processing Plant road. Upon arrival, officers found Agliam’s body.

An autopsy determined that the victim died of a single gunshot wound to the chest.
