MEDIA RELEASE

Police are seeking two suspects who allegedly assaulted a 21-year-old male tourist in the early morning hours of Sunday (August 18, 2002).

An investigation determined that after leaving a Kailua-Kona nightclub, the California resident had been hitchhiking along Alii Drive when he caught a ride with a group of juveniles riding in a Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck. The juveniles took him to an area near the White Sands Beach Park.

There, the victim was assaulted and robbed of his cell phone, wristwatch, jewelry and cash. The victim was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was treated for a broken nose, fractured eye socket and concussion.

The suspects taking part in the attack are described as being a local male about 17 to 19 years of age and black male about 5-feet-10 to 6 feet in height and having short hair worn “twisted and sticking up all over his head.”

Anyone with information about the incident or the identities of the suspects are asked to call Detective Nancy Haitsuka of the Kona Criminal Investigation Section at 326-4227 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. The numbers are answered 24 hours a day. Callers will be given a coded number and their identity will remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their call leads to an arrest, indictment or the recovery of property.
