Big Island police are asking for the public’s help in determining the cause of a fire that destroyed a home in the Hawaiian Beaches subdivision of Puna on July 5, 2000.

Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives are continuing an investigation into the cause of the blaze.

Responding to a 3:55 a.m. call, police and fire personnel arrived to find the single-story, wooden structure on Moana Street completely engulfed in flames.

No one was injured in the blaze. The home, belonging to Beverly Medeiros, had been vacant for about a month when the fire occurred.

Anyone with information about the cause of the fire is asked to call Hilo CIS Detective Nixon Medina at 961-2379.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. The numbers are answered 24 hours a day. Callers will be given a coded number and their identity will remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their call leads to an arrest, indictment or the recovery of property. Crime Stoppers neither subscribes to “Caller ID,” nor does it record phone calls.
