MEDIA RELEASE

The Hawaii Police Department is continuing its investigation into the death of an unidentified adult male whose body was found on Sunday (November 2, 2003) in the vicinity of the 12 mile marker of the Saddle Road. Police have still not been able to identify the victim who is described as having a fair complexion, being approximately 6′ 01″ in height, slim build, having what appears to be salt and pepper colored hair, a 3″ scar on the front lower thigh of his right leg, wearing green and brown short swimming trunks with rear pockets that are red in color, and a green colored aloha print shirt. Police have however received information from the public that may assist them in the investigation and are seeking additional help based on the information received.

Criminal Investigation Section Detectives have determined that sometime during the week of October 27 through 31, 2003 a Caucasian male was observed to be “hitchhiking” on Kaumana drive (Which is concurrently referred to as the Saddle Road). Police have noted that it is unusual for people to hitchhike on this particular road more so, in the area above the 7 mile marker (just below the Country Club Estates subdivision). Anyone who may have seen a Caucasian male “hitchhiker” during the indicated time span is asked to contact the Hawaii Police Department.

Police Detectives are also seeking the public’s help in identifying a male who is being sought as a possible witness in this investigation. Police have learned that on Friday, October 31, 2003, at approximately 10:00 a.m., a male described as Asian looking, approximately 38 to 40 years of age, having a dark complexion, being approximately 5’06” in height, weighing approximately 130 pounds, having a skinny build, with black in color medium length, straight hair was also seen in the vicinity of the 12 mile marker off of the Saddle Road, apparently picking flowers. It is believed that this person may have information relevant to this investigation. A composite drawing of this individual is being made public in the hope that either he or anyone knowing his identity will contact the Hawaii Police Department.

Anyone having information as to the identity of the victim in this investigation, or having information about the “hitchhiker” or the adult male whose sketch accompanies this update is asked to contact Detective Jason Cortez of the Hilo Criminal Investigation Section at 961-2255 or to call Hilo Crimestoppers at 961-8300 or West Hawaii Crimestoppers at 329-8181.
