Hilo police are asking for the public’s help in solving a robbery and assault that occurred shortly before noon on Monday (May 8, 2001) in the downtown area.

Police said a 21-year-old man was walking toward the downtown area over the Puueo Bridge when he was assaulted by a suspect who grabbed his wallet and fled.

The victim told police that he was on his way to pay rent at a downtown bank branch between 11:30 and 11:45 a.m. when the suspect jumped him, struck him in the left temple, grabbed his wallet, which contained his rent money in cash, and fled. The victim said the suspect fled makai on Wailuku Drive.

The victim said he saw his assailant only from behind. He described the suspect as being a local male, being about 5-feet-8 to 5-feet-9 in height, weighing about 170 pounds with a medium build, having short black hair trimmed above the collar and wearing a white T-shirt and light colored pants.

Anyone with information about the incident or who saw someone running in the area shortly before noon is asked to call Officer Royce Serrao of the South Hilo Patrol Division at 961-2213 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.
