Police are seeking the public’s help in solving the theft of building materials from a Volcano area houselot in Puna.

An unknown thief or thieves stole the building materials sometime between December 27, 2002, and January 1, 2003.

Among the items taken were 32 new sheets of green, 24-foot steel panels with a custom four-ribbed pattern, which can be used for roofing or siding, and screws made of lead, which can contaminate water catchment systems.

Anyone with information about the theft or the identity of the thieves is asked to call the Keaau station at 966-5835 or the police department’s non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. The numbers are answered 24 hours a day. Callers will be given a coded number and their identity will remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their call leads to an arrest, indictment or the recovery of property. Crime Stoppers neither subscribes to “Caller ID,” nor does it record phone calls.
