Ka’u police are investigating a reported kidnapping in which a 59-year-old female reported being tied up and struck in the head with a rifle on Sunday (September 29, 2002).

The victim told police that about 7 p.m., she was tied up, assaulted and threatened by a 21-year-old suspect, whom police identified as Derek S.K. Fontes of Pahala, Ka’u.

Police said the suspect fled the scene, possibly to Puna, before officers arrived.

Fontes is described as being of Asian descent, being 5-feet-6 in height, weighing about 140 pounds, having brown eyes, black long hair, possibly in a pony tail, and a mustache and beard.

Anyone with information about the suspect’s whereabouts is asked to call Sergeant William Souther of the Ka’u Patrol at 939-2520 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Fontes is also wanted on an outstanding bench warrant.
