Police are seeking the public’s help in finding a thief or thieves who stolen about 65 pieces of jewelry during the burglary of a wholesale store in Puna.

Police said that sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning (February 7 and 8, 2002), a thief or thieves entered the Hawaii Cargo store located on the Keaau-Pahoa Road (Highway 130) next to Verna’s Drive Inn in Keaau.

The burglars stole jewelry valued at more than $5,000.

Owners of the store have offered a reward for information leading to the apprehension of the suspects or return of the stolen jewelry.

Anyone with information about the burglary or the identities of the burglars is asked to contact Officers William Derr or John Weber at the Keaau police station at 966-5835 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. The numbers are answered 24 hours a day. Callers will be given a coded number and their identity will remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their call leads to an arrest, indictment or the recovery of property. Crime Stoppers neither subscribes to “Caller ID,” nor does it record phone calls.
