MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police are looking for a male suspect who assaulted a male victim and got away with about $80 in cash inside a purse early Sunday (January 2, 2005).

The victim was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was treated for injuries and released.

Responding to a 1:47 a.m. call, South Hilo patrol officers determined that the male victim in the downtown area of Hilo reported he was given a ride to the Veterans Cemetery II area of Hilo, where he got into an argument with the driver outside the car. The driver then assaulted him and drove away with a denim jeans purse, which had the brand name “Mudd” printed in red on the side and contained a denim jacket and $80 in cash.

The suspect was described as a local part-Portuguese male in his mid-20s, being 5-feet-10 in height, weighing about 150 pounds with a skinny build, having short straight black hair and wearing a black T-shirt, khaki cargo shorts and a black baseball cap.

The suspect was driving a late-model green Dodge Neon four-door sedan, with automatic transmission and a gray interior and which had a child restraint seat behind driver’s seat.

Anyone with information about the assault or the identity of the suspect is asked to call Detective Randal Ishii of the East Hawaii Juvenile Aid Section at 961-2278 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers information is kept strictly confidential.
