MEDIA RELEASE

Kona police seized 1,825 marijuana plants ranging in height from seedlings to 8 feet as part of their continuing “Counter-Cannabis Field Operation.”

The three-day operation was conducted Monday through Wednesday (August 14-16, 2000) in the Kona and Ka’u Districts.

Joining Big Island police officers in the marijuana eradication effort were members of the Hawaii Army National Guard.

During a reconnaissance flight as a part of the eradication mission, police spotted marijuana plants growing near a house in Keokea, South Kona, and obtained a search warrant.

Conducting a search of the property, officers arrested six adults, four males and two females, for alleged drug offenses. Two of the suspects were released, and four are being held pending further investigation.

During the search, officers seized 82 marijuana plants ranging in height from seedlings to 5 feet, an ounce of dried processed marijuana and 76.7 grams of crystal methamphetamine, or “ice,” along with paraphernalia associated with the distribution of crystal methamphetamine.

They also seized $10,000 in cash, a 410-gauge shotgun and a 1990 Toyota Acura sedan for possible forfeiture.
