MEDIA RELEASE

The Hawaii County Police Department will close its conference room at the Kealakehe police station for public use effective June 1, 2002, because it currently doesn’t meet the standards of the U.S. Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The room is being closed on the advice of county attorneys after a member of the public who attended a meeting there brought the accessibility infractions to the attention of county officials.

There are currently no funds available to make the needed alterations. The county is under a consent decree, approved by the federal courts, to bring all county facilities in compliance with the ADA accessibility standards, however. As part of the consent decree, schedules of accessibility modifications were developed with considerable community input. At the present time, modifications at the Kealakehe police station are scheduled to occur sometime after July 1, 2006.

Many community groups have used the conference room, and the Police Department apologizes for any inconvenience this closure may cause.
