MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police will step up DUI enforcement during the holiday season.

Sergeant Leroy Victorino, head of the Traffic Enforcement Unit, said police will increase the number of DUI roadblocks in an effort to ensure a safe holiday for residents and visitors alike.

“We’re making a concerted effort to get drunk drivers off the road so everyone can enjoy the holidays,” Victorino said.

“The Hawaii County Police Department wishes everyone a happy and safe holiday season.”

Victorino noted that as of Sunday (November 23, 2003) Big Island police had arrested 916 motorists for drunk driving, a 17 percent increase over the 785 arrested for the same offense last year.
