MEDIA RELEASE

Police have turned over to the County Prosecutor’s Office the results of an investigation into a case in which a house was destroyed after suspects set fire to a stolen car.

County prosecutors will decide whether to seek a grand jury indictment against the suspects, two males and two females ranging in age from 21 to 32, detectives said. None of the suspects in the case has been arrested or charged yet.

According to investigators, on August 13, 2003, the suspects were in the process of breaking into a car when they were caught in the act by the owner. The suspects sped away in a second car, a light-colored Honda that police later determined was a stolen automobile.

The Honda later stalled near St. Joseph Church on Kapiolani Street, but the suspects got it started again and drove to a residence on Halai Street. There, they parked in the carport and set fire to the car. Flames from the car spread and set both the carport and house on fire. Both were destroyed by the flames.

The owner of the house, an 80-year-old female, was not at home at the time.
