MEDIA RELEASE

Police are advising motorists to exercise extra caution over the upcoming Labor Day weekend.

Sergeant Randy K. Apele, head of the Traffic Services Section, said police expect heavier than usual traffic on Big Island roadways from Friday afternoon (October 31, 2001) through “Labor Day” on Monday.

In addition, Apele said, motorcyclists from throughout the state will hold their annual Labor Day motorcycle run circling the island.

To help ensure a safe holiday, Apele said police will set up drunk driving and speeding checkpoints around the island.

He also urged motorcyclists to make sure their motorcycles meet equipment requirements, especially for exhaust systems.

“We would like to remind all motorists to exercise caution in their driving and to plan their trips ahead of time,” he said.

“If everyone drives with caution, we can all have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend.”
