MEDIA RELEASE

Police are warning Big Island residents to be aware of a possible credit card scam.

Police said a Puna resident received a call Wednesday (October 10, 2001) from someone saying he represented a “United Credit Company” in Florida. The caller asked the resident to make a direct electronic deposit of about $250 into the company account. In return, he was promised a platinum credit card.

Police said legitimate credit card companies do not request direct electronic deposits of cash in order to open a credit card account and warned residents to be wary of calls such as this.
