Big Island police are notifying the public of an apparent variation on a repeating scam by an individual claiming to be from Nigeria.
At least one Big Island resident has received a letter from “Dr. James Osaigbovo,” the purported brother of the wife of the late Nigerian head of state, General Sani Abacha.
In return for help in transferring out of Nigeria $39.5 million in funds allegedly frozen by the Nigerian government, the “brother” offers to give the recipient $2.5 million of the funds.
The recipient of the letter is asked to provide the “brother” with his telephone and fax numbers so that the “brother” can send “full details of the transaction” and arrange for a meeting.
Police said that anyone who has been victimized by this apparent scam and suffered a financial loss should report it to the police by calling 935-3311.
