Police warn of rash of South Kohala vehicle thefts 02-14-05

In response to a rash of recent car thefts, South Kohala police are advising residents to make sure they lock up their vehicles and take the keys with them when they park – even when they park at home.

Police said that since January 22, 2005, there have been eight vehicle thefts and two attempted vehicle thefts in the South Kohala District. Two of the thefts occurred in Waimea, the remainder occurred in Waikoloa Village and at Kohala Coast resort areas.

The following vehicles were stolen:

  • From 6:15 p.m. on January 21 to 7 a.m. January 22, a 1994 green Subaru sedan was stolen from the parking lot of the Paniolo Club condos in Waikoloa.
  • From 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. on January 28, a 1990 tan Honda Civic was stolen from the driveway of a residence on Papuan Street in Waimea.
  • From 5:30 p.m. on January 26 to 7:50 a.m. on January 27, thieves attempted to steal a 1988 brown Honda from a condominium parking lot in Waikoloa.
  • From noon to 12:30 p.m. on January 28, a 1993 red Honda Desol was stolen from the parking lot of the Hapuna Beach Park.
  • From 7 a.m. on January 31 to 11 a.m. February 2, a blue 2003 Ford Ranger pickup truck was stolen from the Hilton Waikoloa Village Resort.
  • From to 5 to 6 a.m. on February 3, a silver 2001 Tacoma pickup truck was stolen from the North Hawaii Community Hospital parking Lot in Waimea.
  • From noon to 2 p.m. on February 4, a gray 1998 Jaguar was stolen from a residential garage on Puako Beach Drive.
  • From 11:30 p.m. February 5 to 11:30 a.m. February 7, a rented black 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer was stolen from the Waikoloa Mariott parking lot.
  • About 3 a.m. February 10, thieves tried to steal a 2005 white Pontiac sedan from the Fairmont Orchid Resort.
  • From 1:40 p.m. to 2 p.m. on February 11, a 1999 white Chrysler sedan was stolen from the Kawaihae Market and Deli Shopping Center in Kawaihae.

Police have since recovered the 1994 Subaru, 1990 Civic, 2003 Ford Ranger, 1993 Jaguar and 2005 Chevy Trailblazer.

Police are also asking that anyone with information about the car thefts call Sergeant Floyd Richards of the South Kohala Patrol at 887-3080 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.
