Police are warning Big Island residents about another telephone scam, this one soliciting funds allegedly for the Hawaii County Police Department.
A would-be victim called police and reported she had received a telephone call from a man who said he was seeking donations ranging from $175 to $5,000 for unspecified use by the Police Department.
The caller told the woman she could put the money in a commercial mail carrier envelope and send it to a Waikiki address.
The caller said he was calling from Waikiki, but the woman noted that a local number was displayed on her Caller I.D. monitor. The woman later called the local number, but found that it had been disconnected.
