MEDIA RELEASE

Police are warning Big Island residents to be wary of a new telephone scam in which the caller offers a scheme in which the victim is promised $10,000 in exchange for $4,000.

In this scam, the caller identifies himself as a “Steve Martin” and gives an address in the Slovak Republic.

The caller asks the victim to send the $4,000 to “First America Salino U.S. No. 20, Salizskaio, 2102 Brahisl, Slovak Republic.”

Police said this latest telephone scam is apparently aimed at elderly persons.

Besides alerting the public to the scam, police are urging younger residents to explain the scam to their parents or elderly relatives who may not regularly have access to local news media outlets.
