MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police are warning residents to be on guard against another telephone scam, this one offering a large monetary prize in return for sending a smaller amount of money.

Police said several residents reported receiving a phone call, allegedly from Canada, telling them they had won $50,000. But in order to receive the “prize,” the caller said the “prize-winner” first must send $2,000 or $2,500.

The caller provided a phone number, but a check by police officers determined that no registered business was listed under that number.

Police are warning residents not to send any money to the caller, noting that legitimate prize offers do not require the recipients to send money in advance.
