The Hawai`i Police Department is warning residents of a sharp increase in theft of purses from shopping carts of customers in several Big Island stores. There has been a rash of thefts especially in the Hilo area.

Shoppers are being reminded to keep their purses and handbags with them or within their immediate vision to avoid becoming a victim of the thefts. Police are also asking all shoppers to be aware of the thefts and report any suspicious activity to store security or the police.

Anyone observing a theft is asked not to approach the suspect, but report the theft as soon as possible to police or store security.

Anyone who may have any information about these thefts is asked to contact the police non-emergency number at 935-3311. Individuals who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers information is kept strictly confidential.
