MEDIA RELEASE

A 60-year-old Colorado man apparently drowned Monday (June 19, 2000) while swimming in Kealakekua Bay, South Kona.

The victim was identified as Timothy Cavanagh, of Greeley, Colorado.

Responding to an 11:37 a.m. call, fire rescue personnel learned that Cavanagh was swimming near the Captain Cook monument when crewmen aboard the Fair Wind, a snorkel cruise catamaran, noticed him floating face down in the water.

The Seaquest, a second tour boat nearby, took the victim to the dock at Napoopoo, where fire rescue personnel tried unsuccessfully to revive him.

Cavanagh was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:17 p.m.

Police have classified the case as a coroner’s inquest and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
