Media Release

Big Island police have reclassified their investigation into the disappearance of a 69-year-old Hilo man from a missing person case to a murder.

Stephen Lamaka Pua of Kapiolani Street was last seen alive on April 12, 2007, at the home of 28-year-old Sarah Wilson who was later also reported missing.  She had last been seen on April 18, 2007, at a Kailua-Kona hotel.

Wilson was located in good health out of state on June 28, 2007.  Also on that day, a set of human remains were found on the Pepeekeo coastline. The condition of the remains did not lend itself to any form of identification other than DNA. However, detectives suspected that it was Pua.  Detectives recently received the DNA results and were able to positively identify the remains as that of Stephen Pua.

Police are still seeking 34-year-old Cedrick Darby who was also residing at the Hilo home where Pua was last seen alive.  He is believed to be out of state at this time.

Detectives assigned to the Criminal Investigation Section are continuing the investigation.
