Puna police officers are cautioning motorists to drive with extra care near the new Kamehameha School, which opened last week in Keaau.
Traffic passing the school must slow down to allow traffic to enter and leave the school grounds, located on the Volcano Highway (Route 11) across from the Keaau Agriculture Lots.
Traffic lights are to be installed at the school intersection, at Route 11 and Paahana Street, as soon as they are available. In the meantime, special duty police officers are stationed at the school in the morning at the beginning of school and in the afternoon at the end.
Police said morning traffic currently is being backed up to Kurtistown because of increased traffic caused by students and faculty members arriving at school and construction work.
They are urging motorists to plan ahead and be aware of the traffic tie-up.
