A 57-year-old Mt. View man died Wednesday (June 2) from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle/moped crash on Route 11, .1 mile north of Psyzk Road in Mt. View.

Responding to a 2:45 p.m. call, Puna patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a 2007 Sangyang moped and traveling north in the northbound shoulder of Route 11 when he pulled out onto the northbound lane and was struck by a 2005 Ford Sport Trac pick-up truck also traveling north.

The moped rider was dead at the scene and officially pronounced dead at 4:55 p.m. at the Hilo Medical Center.

The moped rider was not wearing a helmet.

The driver of the Ford truck, a 59-year-old man from Glenwood and his passenger, a 17-year-old boy were not injured. They were both wearing their seatbelts.

It is unknown at this time if speed, alcohol or drugs were involved in this crash.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of the next of kin.

This is the 15th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared to ten at the same time last year.
