A 58-year-old Pāhoa man died Thursday (August 13) at The Queens Medical Center from injuries he sustained in a one-vehicle crash on Route 132 in the Puna District in the area of the 7-mile marker on August 5.
Responding to a 3:10 p.m. call, Puna patrol officers determined that a 39-year-old Kea’au woman was operating a 1999 Saturn 2-door sedan and traveling south on Route 132 when she ran off the roadway into some bushes.
Fire Rescue personnel took both the driver and her passenger to Hilo Medical Center.
The passenger was later flown to The Queens Medical Center in Honolulu in critical condition. He died at 12:02 a.m. on August 13.
The driver of the vehicle was treated and released for her injuries.
Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a negligent homicide case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
The name of the victim is being withheld pending positive identification.
It is unknown at this time if speed or alcohol were involved.

This is the 14th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 14 at this time last year.
