MEDIA RELEASE

A 20-year-old Keaau man died Saturday (November 19, 2005) at the Queen’s Medical Center from injuries he sustained in an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV)crash on November 15, 2005 on 21st Avenue in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision.

The victim was identified as Paul David Youngs of Keaau.

Responding to a 4:00 p.m. call, on November 15, 2005, Puna patrol officers determined that the victim was riding his Suzuki 250 ATV in a northerly direction on 21st Avenue between Kaloli and Paradise Drive when he lost control, ran off the right side of the road and struck a rock wall. He was not wearing a helmet.

The victim was transported to the Hilo Medical Center by Fire Department Rescue personnel and was later flown to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition.

The victim was pronounced dead at 9:27 p.m. on Saturday night.

Speed is believed to be a factor in this crash.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a Coroner’s Inquest case and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Being that this crash occurred on a private road, the death is not counted towards the islands traffic fatality count.
