MEDIA RELEASE (UPDATE)

Hilo detectives arrested a 17-year-old male for second-degree murder just before 6 p.m. Sunday in connection with the reported shooting of a Puna man early Sunday morning (February 25).

Puna patrol officers investigating the reported shooting located the burned remains of the victim in a vehicle that had been set on fire near the shoreline in the Waa Waa area of lower Puna. Due to the condition of the body, police were unable to immediately identify the victim. Efforts are being made to identify the remains through dental records and DNA.

As part of their investigation, detectives with the Criminal Investigations Section were searching for the juvenile suspect when they received information about his location from a member of his family. He was taken into custody without incident.

Detectives charged the suspect this morning with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, second-degree arson and unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.

Custody of the juvenile was relinquished to Deputy Sheriffs at the request of Family Court Probations personnel. His name is being withheld because he is a minor.

An autopsy to determine the exact cause of the victim’s death is scheduled for Tuesday (February 27).

Police ask anyone with information about this investigation to call Detective Richard Sherlock at 961-2379 or the Police Department’s non-emergency number at 961-8300.
