MEDIA RELEASE (UPDATE NO. 2)

Preliminary results of an autopsy conducted Tuesday reveal that a person found dead in Puna on Sunday morning died from a single shotgun wound to the head.

The autopsy also confirmed that the victim was a male.

Puna patrol officers investigating the reported shooting Sunday located the burned remains of the victim in a vehicle that had been set on fire near the shoreline in the Waa Waa area of lower Puna. Due to the condition of the body, police have been unable to positively identify the victim. Efforts are being made to identify his remains through dental records and DNA.

A 17-year-old male was arrested Sunday and charged Monday with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, second-degree arson and unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. His name is being withheld because he is a minor.

Police ask anyone with information about this investigation to call Detective Richard Sherlock at 961-2379 or the Police Department’s non-emergency number at 961-8300.
