HAWAII COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT
PUNA PATROL DISTRICT
CAPTAIN ELROY OSORIO, DISTRICT COMMANDER

MAY 17, 2001MEDIA RELEASE

The Puna District of the Hawaii County Police Department celebrated Police Week with a luncheon Wednesday (May 16, 2001) to honor Officer Iris McGuire as the Puna Patrol Officer of the Year for 2000.

McGuire, who lives in Hawaiian Beaches, joined the Department in September 1998. She was briefly station in North Kohala before she was transferred back to her home district.

She is the youngest officer, both in age and years on the police force, ever to receive the award. During her short career, she has managed to impress her fellow officers with her courage, her tenacity and her dependability.

District Commander Elroy Osorio said of McGuire: “She is grounded in the community, bright, articulate and compassionate. She possesses that intangible quality that is the foundation of any good beat cop — judgment. I was not surprised her brother officers honored her this way.

The winner of this year’s award was selected by her peers in a tradition that stretches back to 1996, when the award was started. Past winners include Samuel Jelsma, 1996; John Pagay, 1997; Lloyd Ishikawa, 1998; and Michael Aina, 1999.

Also honored at the district luncheon was Traffic Safety Officer of the year, John Weber. He was chosen by the Puna Traffic Safety Council, which reviewed district traffic statistics and performance records to make their selection.

Weber joined the Department in February 1998. He lives in Hawaiian Paradise Park with his wife Melissa, a police radio dispatcher with the department.
