MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police are asking for the public’s help in solving a theft and robbery that occurred last February at Kehena Beach Park in Puna.

Between 4 and 4:30 p.m., a bystander told a male visitor from Egremont, Massachusetts, that a man operating a purple “Enduro dirt bike” motorcycle had cut the convertible top of his rental car and stole several objects from it.

The victim then drove in the direction that the thief took and later caught up with the suspect. After confronting him, the victim got into a fight with the suspect. The suspect later returned the victim’s belongings and left the scene on the motorcycle.

The suspect is described as being 5-feet-8 or 5-feet-9 in height with a medium build and broad shoulders and having a dark complexion, medium length black hair and possibly a mustache.

Anyone with information about the incident or the suspect is asked to call Detective Lewis Wilson of the Hilo Criminal Investigation Section at 961-2382.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. The numbers are answered 24 hours a day. Callers will be given a coded number and their identity will remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their call leads to an arrest, indictment or the recovery of property. Crime Stoppers neither subscribes to “Caller ID,” nor does it record phone calls.
