MEDIA RELEASE

A 67-year-old Kurtistown man died Thursday (June 8, 2006) from injuries he sustained in a two-truck crash at the intersection of Route 11 and Huina Road in Kurtistown.

The victim was identified as Stanley S. Shibuya of Kurtistown.

Responding to a 6:10 a.m. call, Puna patrol officers determined that Shibuya was traveling east on Huina Road and crossing the intersection in a 1998 Dodge pickup truck when a 1992 Mazda pickup truck traveling south crashed into him.

The driver of the Mazda, a 38-year-old Mountain View man, was not injured. He told police he lost his brakes and could not stop.

Police don’t know yet if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Fire rescue personnel took Shibuya to Hilo Medical Center, where he died at 9:37 a.m.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a standard negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 15th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with the same number at this time last year.
