MEDIA RELEASE

A 77-year-old Papaikou woman was killed Thursday (December 26, 2002) in a three-car accident on the Keaau-Pahoa Road (Route 130) near the four-mile marker in Puna.

The victim was identified as Poliperia Domingcil.

Responding to a 1 p.m. call, Puna police determined that a 2000 Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by Kim Milner, 50, of Keaau, was traveling east on Route 130 and slowing down in traffic when it was rear-ended by a 1995 Pontiac four-door sedan driven by Alison Vares, 35, of Mountain View, Puna. The collision forced the Ford Ranger into the oncoming lane and collided with a 1995 Chevrolet four-door sedan driven by Normus Castaneda, 60, of Papaikou.

Domingcil, a front-seat passenger in Castaneda’s vehicle, was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 3:45 p.m.

The other occupants involved in the collision were also taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where they were treated for minor injuries and released. All occupants were wearing seat belts, and the airbags in Castaneda’s vehicle were deployed.

Police have initiated a standard negligent homicide investigation and ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Thursday’s death was the 28th traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 31 at the same time last year.
