SERGEANT CHRISTOPHER D. GALI
MARCH 27, 2006
An 11-year-old Pepeekeo boy died Monday (March 27, 2006) from injuries he sustained in a two-vehicle traffic collision on the Mamalahoa Highway (Route 190), .1 mile north of the 21-Mile-Marker in the Puuanahulu area of North Kona.
The victim was identified as Christopher Bartolome-Robinson of a Pepeekeo address.
Responding to a 1:01 p.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that the victim’s uncle, a 35-year-old Pahoa man was operating a 1993 Acura two-door sedan and traveling north when he lost control, crossed the centerline and collided with a 2006 Chevrolet four-door sedan traveling south. The driver of the Chevrolet, a 40-year-old Honolulu man was not injured.
The child and his uncle were transported to the North Hawaii Community Hospital by Fire Rescue personnel where the boy later died at 3:12 p.m.
It is unknown at this time if speed or alcohol were involved. At the time of the collision there was light rain and the road was wet. The occupants of both vehicles were wearing their seatbelts.
Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a standard negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
This is the 11th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared to eleven at the same time last year.
