MEDIA RELEASE

Reservations are still being taken for two events in the 11th annual Hawaii Police Commemorative Fund Tournament — the Shige 5K run and 1.5-mile walk and the Shige Golf Tournament.

The events are part of a three-day multi-event sports tournament to be held May 18-20, 2001, and sponsored by employees, families and friends of the Hawaii County Police Department.

The run and walk will be held at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at the Gilbert Carvalho Park in Hilo. The golf tournament will be held Sunday, May 20, at the Banyan Golf Course in Hilo.

Anyone interested in taking part in the 5K run and 1.5-mile walk may pick up an application at the Hilo Police Station Receiving Desk, the Kona Police Station, the Keaau Police Station or the Foot Locker at the Prince Kuhio Plaza. In addition, applications will be accepted between 6 and 7 a.m. at Gilbert Carvalho Park on the day of the event.

There is a $15 entrance fee for the run and the walk for those entering before May 17. The fee for late entrants is $20. Each entrant will receive a Commemorative Fund fanny pack with water bottle holder. Awards will be presented to both runners and walkers following the completion of the event.

For more information on the 5K run and 1.5-mile walk, call Police Captain Elroy Osorio Jr. at 966-5835 during business hours.

Applications are also being accepted for the golf tournament. The $45 entrance fee includes a round of golf and a golf cart.

Among the prizes that will go to winners are one inter-island round-trip ticket from Aloha airlines; a certificate for a round of golf for four at the Waikoloa Kings Course; four certificates for a round of golf for two at the Francis H. Brown Golf Course at Mauna Lani; and a certificate for one night’s stay for two at the Hilton Waikoloa Village.

For an application or more information on the golf tournament, call Officer Joe Botelho or Officer Darren Horio at 961-2211 during business hours.

Proceeds from the police tournament events are used to fund the construction of a memorial for police officers who have been killed in the line of duty in the State of Hawaii and to provide annual scholarships for students enrolled in the Administration of Justice programs at UH-Hilo and Hilo Community College.
