The 10th annual Hawaii Police Commemorative Fund Tournament held last weekend (May 29-21, 2000) raised about $3,500 for worthy causes.
The tournament, coordinated by Detective Greg Esteban and held at the Carvalho Park Complex, featured 24 teams and 100 runners and walkers who took part in four sports events over the three-day period.
Proceeds from the tournament will go to fund scholarships in the administration of justice programs at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and Hawaii Community College and to build a monument in memory of fallen police officers.
In the “Shige 5K” run, Wesley Hagio won the Overall Men’s Division with a time of 17:45. Diane Kohara was the Overall Women’s Division for the second year in a row with a time of 21:36.
Other Men’s Division winners and their times were: Student, Kahiapo Chartrand, 33:47; Junior, Sol Ray Duncan, 24:16; Open, Jon Pauole, 18:37; Masters, Brown Bear, 20:40; and Golden Masters, Wayne Joseph, 20:55.
Other Women’s Division winners and their times were: Student, Jackie Joseph, 36:17; Junior, Veronica Wedemann, 29:39; Open, Kainoa Pauole, 22:09; Masters, Millie Cooke, 21:45; and Golden Masters, Marie Kuramoto, 29:53.
Mike Rushton of the Puna District was the first place police finisher for the second year in a row, beating his old record of 21:30 with a time of 20:48. And Chris Gali of the Traffic Enforcement Unit was the final police finisher with a time of 51:05.
In the 1.5-mile walk, Clarence Andrade won the Overall Men’s Division, and Erin Goya won the Overall Women’s Division.
Other Men’s Division winners were: Student, Jake Kunimitsu; Junior, none entered; Open, Mitch Roth; Masters, Paul Silva; Golden Masters, Stephen Sakoda; and Seniors, Ken Kunimitsu.
Other Women’s Division winners were: Student, Kailina Morita; Junior, Michelle Victorine; Open, Keri Morita; Masters, Patti Kodama; Golden Masters, Madeline Silva; and Seniors, Adeline Fujisawa.
First police finisher was Chaplain Duane Slocum, and the final finisher was Ronald K. Jitchaku.
The “Shige 5K” run and 1.5-mile walk are named in honor of the memory of Ronald Shigeru “Shige” Jitchaku, a veteran police officer who was killed in the line of duty on May 7, 1990, while he and fellow officers were trying to quell a large riot on Banyan Drive in Hilo.
A total of eight teams took part in this year’s basketball tournament, which was dedicated to Officer Michael “Popo” Aina, who died this year.
In the Law Enforcement Division, Bay City Blues beat Hilo Patrol 79-62 to take first place. Third place went to Makali’i. The high scoreres were Randy Apele of Bay City Blues with 32 points and Louie Ondo Jr. of the Hilo Patrol with 23 points.
In the Open Division, Keaukaha beat Dolan, Silva and Associates 80-69 for first place. Third Place went to Fire. The high scorers were Honky Wakita of Keaukaha with 18 points and Aaron Kaleo of Dolan, Silva and Associates with 29 points.
In the Daison “Froggie” Morita Mixed Volleyball tournament, Corrections won first place with 10 wins and two losses with a total of 121 points. Keaukaha won second place with 9 wins and 3 losses with a total of 121 points, and Tuff Stuff took third with 9 wins and 3 losses and a total of 119 points. The tournament is named in honor of a firefighter who died in a traffic accident
Nine teams participated in the Kenneth Keliipio Softball Tournament. First place went to Line Drive, which beat Most Wanted 16-11. Team Sports took third place in the tournament, named for a police officer killed in an automobile accident while on duty. Special thanks for the tournament went to all participating teams, John “Keone” Rodrigues, Kanoelehua Industrial Area Association, Concept Printing Professionals, Sports Line, Manuel Moniz of the County Parks and Recreation Department, Paul Moffett, director of the Hilo Civic Complex, the Trophy Case and Ken’s Towing.
In a new event this year, the Goodwill Golf Tournament, held at the Banyan Drive Golf Course, Schoen Maekawa had the low net with a score of 59, and Darren Ah Chong had the low gross with a 74.
In the A Flight, Darren Ah Chong took first place with a 62; Morton Carter took second with a 63; and Sonny Sua took third with a 65.
In the B Flight, Schoen Maekawa was first with a 59; Richard Tanaka was second with a 59; and Melvin Cadaoas was third with a 66.
In the C Flight, Chu Chu Kanuha took first with a 66; Russel Paiva took second with a 70; and Paul Silva took third with a 71.
In the Calloway, Rollins Rabara came in first and Chris Gali was second. Sonny Sua had the longest drive at 312 yards on the 12th hole, and Richard Tanaka was closest to the hole at 34 inches on the 11th.
