The Hawaii County Police Department issued a total of 344 citations for automobile seat belt violations during a recent “Click It or Ticket” campaign.
The campaign, aimed at increasing awareness of Hawaii’s seat belt laws, was conducted from August 25 through September 8, 2002, in Hilo, Kona and Puna.
Besides the 344 seat belt citations, officers at 35 check stations set up during the campaign also issued three citations for child restrain violations, gave out 205 citations for other violations and made five arrests.
A similar campaign was conducted in May and June of this year. In that effort, officers issued 738 citations for seat belt violations, 25 citations for child restraint violations and 458 citations for other violations. They also made seven arrests.
Sergeant Randy K. Apele, head of the Traffic Services Section, said that although the current phase of the “Click It or Ticket” campaign has been completed, police officers would continue to enforce seat belt and child restraint safety regulations throughout the island.
