MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police are warning the public about several mail scams aimed at persuading Hawaii County residents to give away money.

In one scam, a letter claims to be soliciting donations for West Hawaii Crime Stoppers. The sender of the solicitation has been traced to Arizona and has no affiliation with West Hawaii Crime Stoppers.

Another letter comes with a bogus check for a large amount of money. It claims that the recipients have won even more money and asks the recipients to deposit the check and then send a sizeable sum as a "processing fee" so they can receive the balance.

Police said other similar mail scams are circulating in the Kona area. They ask anyone who receives a suspicious solicitation to call Sergeant Nancy Haitsuka in the Community Policing Section at 326-4646, extension 259.
