In conjunction with World Health Day 2004 on April 7, 2004, Big Island police conducted six seat belt safety checkpoints throughout the Big Island.
As a result of the effort, officers cited 81 motorists for seat belt violations, two for child restraint violations and 57 other traffic violations.
Sergeant Randy K. Apele, head of the Traffic Services Section, said it was important to enforce seat belt and child restraint regulations because “seat belts are the No. 1 defense against serious injury or death and traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for age groups from 4 through 34 years of age.”
For this reason, the World Health Organization selected road traffic safety as the theme for World Health Day 2004.
