On October 19, 2005 (Wednesday), at 2:30 p.m., Big Island police apprehended escapee Shawn Dennis DeCosta, M-25, in Opolu, North Kohala. Decosta was one of three detainees who escaped from the Hawaii Community Correctional Center on October 2, 2005.
At approximately 11:45 a.m. Wednesday morning, North Kohala patrol officers received information that Shawn DeCosta, was seen at a residence in Kokoiki, North Kohala. Responding to the residence patrol officers observed DeCosta as a passenger in a vehicle attempting to leave the area. As officers attempted to stop the vehicle, DeCosta exited the vehicle and fled into a nearby pastureland and hid within the dense foliage. With the assistance of the Hawaii Fire Department’s helicopter, police located and apprehended Decosta as he attempted to flee the area.
In addition to the Escape charge, Decosta was also arrested for Promoting Dangerous Drugs and Drug Paraphernalia after he was found in possession of .2 gram of ice (crystal methamphetamine) on his person at the time of arrest. DeCosta remains in police custody at the Kona District Station pending Detectives continuing the investigation into the additional charges.
Decosta is the second of three escapees apprehended after he, Franklin Enos, M-31, and Kole Race-Joaquin, M-23, escaped from custody, while being detained at the Hawaii Community Correctional Center in Hilo. It was reported that the three individuals were able to remove a metal screen and louvers of a restroom window and lower themselves to the ground.
On October 13, 2005, Franklin Enos was apprehended in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision in Puna after he was found sleeping in a parked vehicle in a private driveway.
Currently, Kole Race-Joaquin remains at-large and is considered dangerous and should not be approached.
Police are continuing to follow up on all information received from the public.
