MEDIA RELEASE

The annual “Shige 5K” run will be held Saturday, May 20, 2000, in Hilo.

The five-kilometer run is being held as part of the 10th annual Hawaii Police Commemorative Fund Tournament, a three-day multi-event sports tournament to be held the weekend of May 19-21. The tournament is sponsored by employees, families and friends of the Hawaii County Police Department, and the public is invited to participate.

Proceeds from tournament are used to fund the construction of a memorial for police officers who have been killed in the line of duty in the State of Hawaii and to provide annual scholarships for students enrolled in the Administration of Justice programs at UH-Hilo and Hilo Community College.

The “Shige 5K” run is named in honor of Officer Ronald Shigeru Jitchaku, who was killed in the line of duty on May 7, 1990, in Hilo. Shige was the inspiration for the memorial and tournament, which was established following his death.

The Shige 5K begins and ends at the Gilbert Carvalho Park in Hilo. The route proceeds from the park entrance down Waianuenue Avenue to Komohana Street, then along Komohana to the turn-around point, which is just beyond the Mohouli Street intersection, then back along the same route to the park.

There is also a 1.5-mile walk that also begins at the park and proceeds down Waianuenue Avenue to a turn-around at Hilo High School and back.

Both events will begin promptly at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, May 20.

Applications may be obtained at the information window downstairs at the Hilo Police Station on Kapiolani Street, the Kealakehe Police Station in Kona, the Foot Locker at the Prince Kuhio Plaza, or by calling 966-5835 during normal business hours.

The entrance fee is $15 per person, provided the entry is submitted before the May 16 deadline. Late entrants will be charged $20. Each entrant will receive a Commemorative Fund T-shirt in memory of Officer Jitchaku. To guarantee delivery of your shirt on race day, your application should be submitted by May 8.

Awards will be presented to both runners and walkers following the completion of the event.

Other events occurring throughout the weekend will include volleyball, basketball and softball tournaments. The chairman for the Commemorative Fund Tournament is Greg Esteban.

The chairpersons for the individual events are: Volleyball, Tammy Victorine (961-3107); softball, Keone Rodrigues (961-2350); basketball, Randy Apele (961-2305); and Shige 5K, Elroy Osorio Jr. (966-5835).
