FEBRUARY 22, 2000
A 52-year-old woman died Tuesday night (February 22, 2000) from injuries suffered in a two-truck collision that occurred earlier in the day on Queen Kaahumanu Highway (Route 19) at the intersection with Waikoloa Beach Drive.
The victim was identified as Norma Busque of Waimea.
Responding to a 6:33 a.m. call, police officers determined that a 1994 Mazda pickup truck driven by Mariano Busque, 55, and heading north on Queen Kaahumanu Highway was attempting to turn left onto Waikoloa Beach Drive when it was struck by a 1999 Dodge pickup heading south.
The driver of the Dodge truck, William Boyle, 47, of Waikoloa, was not injured in the collision. Both Mariano Busque, and his wife, Norma Busque, a front seat passenger, were transported to the North Hawaii Community Hospital.
Mariano Busque was confined to the hospital in stable condition. His wife was confined in critical condition and later died of her injuries. She was pronounced dead at 9:34 p.m.
Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a standard negligent homicide investigation and ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Busque’s death was the fourth traffic fatality on the Big island so far this year, compared to one at the same time last year.
