MEDIA RELEASE

A 17-year-old South Kohala boy died Saturday (July 29, 2006) from injuries he sustained in a one-vehicle crash on Route 190, 150 feet south of the 17-mile marker.

Responding to a 10:23 a.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that the victim was traveling north on route 190 when he crossed the centerline, ran off the left side of the road and overturned. It is unknown what time the crash occurred. The vehicle may have been at the crash site for several hours.

The victim was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:16 p.m.

It is unknown at this time if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash. It appears the victim was not wearing his seat belt.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 20th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared with 19 at this time last year.
