Media Release

A 33-year-old Waimea man died Sunday (July 29) from injuries he sustained in a one-vehicle traffic crash on Thursday (July 26) on Route 190, .6 miles south of the 6-mile marker.

The victim was identified as Joseph Theodore Herrold of Waimea.

Responding to a 2:27 a.m. call Thursday, South Kohala patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a 2004 Hyundai four-door sedan and traveling north on Route 190 when he ran off the road and overturned. The victim was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.

Fire Rescue personnel took the victim to North Hawaii Community Hospital. He was later flown to The Queens Medical Center in Honolulu, where he died Sunday at 4:27 a.m.

Police believe that speed and alcohol contributed to this crash.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 20th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared with 20 at this time last year.
