MEDIA RELEASE

Kona Criminal Investigation Section detectives Friday afternoon (July 9, 1999) charged a 43-year-old South Kona man in the shooting of his brother Wednesday night.

Kenneth Bruce Dang, of Honaunau, was charged at 2 p.m. with second-degree assault, a Class C felony; carrying or use of a firearm in the commission of a separate felony, a Class A felony; and fourth-degree criminal property damage, a misdemeanor. He is being held in the Kona police cellblock in lieu of $12,500 bail.

Police arrested Dang Thursday for attempted murder after he shot his 45-year-old brother in the knee the night before. The attempted murder charge was reduced to second-degree assault, and in the charge of attempted burglary, he was released pending further investigation.

Kona patrol officers had responded to a call Wednesday night of a domestic dispute at a residence on Honaunau Telephone Exchange road in South Kona.

On arrival, the officers determined that two brothers got involved in an argument while intoxicated. The brothers started wrestling on the floor inside the house when the younger brother broke free, walked upstairs, took a .22-caliber rifle and fired three shots downstairs, striking his older brother in the left knee.

The brothers then went outside, where the suspect fired another shot at the victim’s vehicle, shattering the rear window. The victim then drove a half-mile to a neighbor’s house and called police.
