MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police are asking for the public’s help in identifying one or more persons who broke into the county’s Puna base yard operated by the Department of Public Works on Tuesday night (August 22, 2006.)

Puna patrol officers responded at 6 a.m. Wednesday morning to a report of a burning vehicle at a Puna farm and found a 2005 Ford dump truck in flames.

Investigation revealed that the truck is owned by the county and that someone crashed through a chain link fence at the base yard next to the Kurtistown ball park, broke into the truck and removed it from the premises.

Police are investigating possible charges of theft, unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle and criminal property damage.

Police ask anyone who may have any information about the case to call Officer Marcos Santos at 966-5835 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.
