MEDIA RELEASE

Police have charged a 57-year-old man with a variety of felonies stemming from a robbery, a sexual assault, a burglary and false impersonation of a police officer that took place in November 2000.

Investigators from the County Prosecutor’s Office flew to Honolulu on Thursday (May 16, 2002) and picked up the suspect, identified as John Pali Paio Jr., of a Pearl City address on Oahu. Paio was being held there by the Honolulu police.

Paio was charged with two counts of first-degree sexual assault, kidnapping, first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, first-degree terroristic threatening, use of a firearm in commission of a crime, illegal possession of a firearm and impersonating a police officer.

About 7:54 a.m. on November 11, 2000, South Hilo Patrol officers responded to a call from an Olona Street address. There, a female adult reported that a male forced his way into her residence, threatened her with a firearm, demanded money, sexually assaulted her and fled the residence with an undisclosed amount of cash. The victim said the suspect identified himself as a police officer in order to gain entry to her residence.

After being flown to Hilo, Paio was being held in the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $90,000.
