MEDIA RELEASE

Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives have charged a 56-year-old suspect in connection with two robberies that occurred last Tuesday (June 12, 2000) in Hilo.

Rocky Caraballo, of a Pahoa, Puna, address, was charged with two counts of first-degree robbery and two counts of illegal use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Caraballo, who was transported to the Halawa Correctional Facility in Honolulu for parole violation, faces indictment on the robbery charges.

In the first robbery, a male suspect matching Caraballo’s description and brandishing a handgun entered John’s Sportswear on Keawe Street about 2 p.m. and demanded two cameras and money from the store manager. He escaped with the cameras and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Later, at 10:53 p.m., a male suspect answering the same description brandished a handgun at Tesoro Gas Express on the corner of Kalanikoa Street and Kamehameha Avenue and demanded money. The suspect escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The next morning, the suspect was seen in downtown Hilo and was arrested at 7:50 a.m. for a parole violation.
