MEDIA RELEASE

Kona detectives have charged a 25-year-old suspect with a variety of criminal offenses stemming from a domestic abuse call late Saturday (April 20, 2002) in the Kamani Trees subdivision.

The suspect, identified as Rihari Monte Ohia, of a Kailua-Kona address, led responding police on a vehicle and foot chase before he was subdued and arrested.

At 5:31 p.m. Monday, Ohia was charged with two counts of abuse of a family household member, two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, on count of first-degree attempted assault, criminal property damage, criminal contempt of court, drunk driving and numerous other traffic offenses.

When Kona patrol officers responded to Saturday’s call, they confronted Ohia, who was attempted to leave the scene in his vehicle, a 1979 El Camino. While driving away, Ohia intentionally sideswiped a responding officer’s vehicle and fled the scene. His vehicle was spotted minutes later on Alii Drive, and as he attempted to evade police, his vehicle was involved in a one-car crash. Ohia then got out of his car and fled on foot. After a short chase, police apprehended the suspect and arrested him.

Ohia is being held at the Kona police cellblock in lieu of $8,425 bail.
